How to Choose a Good Swimsuit

Choose to rush its main holiday accessory is risky: indeed, our tests reveal that the resistance and the strength of some shirts are frankly inadequate. And that brands are not always the best.
Contrary to appearances, a swimsuit is not always done to bathe and do not necessarily like water. Especially when it is chlorinated… It’s one of the lessons of the exclusive test for Capital by the textile laboratory of Cambresis (CTA). Four of the ten products that we put to the torture indeed came out totally vanquished a long dive in chlorinated water faithfully reproducing a use in the pool. Their colors so much fired. Some boxers have also seen their size shrink and their colors drooling over textiles in their scope (watch your towel!). “The real difference between brands, explains Cyril Grégoire, Director of the laboratory, it is the quality of dyes. “When they are strong, the Jersey will last several years.” This is better: men retain indeed their Speedo a bit more five years on average, compared to two years and 10 months for women. And they invest in this accessory 25 euros, when the ladies spend 120.
To continue with the figures, 20 percent of the 16 million jerseys sold each year in France are, according to the Institute for french fashion, actually intended for swimming: essentially, therefore, is concerned with recreational use, including a little swimming… and a lot of tanning. Where the growing importance of the style. “Men now dare prints, colors, patterns, shapes,” Notes Designer Laureen Allegro, creative of the Lesjolismomes.comsite. All must give a beautiful look and visually attractive. And ensure quick drying, because the Jersey is doing more and more with a t-shirt or shirt. “The shortys or bath boxers are very well to bring out the middle and give an impression of longer legs, especially when the thighs and calves are wide, reveals Laetitia Peyraque, Director of the Agency Board in style as a man. The boardshorts, surfer, be avoided for short men. “The must remains shorts, shorter than the underpants and Ampler than the shorty, so easier to carry by the greatest number.” It is also necessary that this shorty doesn’t shrink at the first swim…
The method of the investigation : we gave two copies of these ten swimsuits to the CTA certified laboratory. A first Jersey of each brand was plunged in the pool water, another in of sea water, in order to judge the quality of dyes. We then measured the resistance of the colors to light (artificial light reproducing a strong exposure to the Sun, 48 hours). Finally, we washed five times each Jersey (full cycle), made them dry flat and measured their disgorging (the fact that they stain on the other present clothes in the machine or not) and their possible variations in size (6 points: length in the crotch, width of the size, width of the thighs…). Each set of tests was scored out of 5, giving a total of 20. Finally, we asked our stylist, Laureen Allegro, to judge the cut and the look of the jerseys.

This shirt fits all conditions of swimming and all body types. The model tested is particularly colorful, but there are more sober in the same range, called Mirage, like the Flex Core 21, all black. Peculiarity of these Australian swimwear, intended originally for surfers: they have no seams, the parts being welded together by a band of tissue. This reduces the friction, but also the risk of variation in size, as we have seen in the laboratory. Finally, their fabric water repellent ensures quick drying. • Made in China.

Almost faultless. Little underperformance in the measure of the sensitivity of the dye to light is to relativize: Blue is indeed the most difficult to stabilize and it is one that turns more easily. Side cut, this is a classic surf version. The shape near the body and the length just give him a little retro. It is simple and elegant. “No fault of taste with this purchase”, ensures our stylist, Laureen Allegro.

It was he who wash, has the most reduced in size. It won’t not necessarily account in putting it on, but it’s the sign as the fabric or clothing (or both) are inadequate. On the other hand, 20 out of 20 for the look: with his retro haircut and his Canadiens belt, we’ll get to Jean Dujardin. If rather muscular, warns our stylist: “neither too thin nor too round. In short, the best ally of those who will have spent the year in sports halls.”

Men buying mostly their swimsuits in sports shop (37% of sales, in front of ready-to-wear chains and supermarkets), Go Sport has developed its own range of swimwear. It is clearly intended to recreational use, more sports. Rather a success: Cup is perfect, says our stylist, neither too broad nor too long. Only downside: the color a bit too noisy and aggressive graphics, which will not fit all.

This Jersey, sold by the famous chain of ready-to-wear, has passed the test with a small variation in the size, but without that it bothers the user, provides the CTA laboratory. Similarly, the pattern is a little affadi of our long series of torture, but remains more than portable. And rather short, this model gives a sporty look, “but it is suitable for all body types,” says stylist. A good quality-price compromise, therefore.

For a first prize, totally unbeatable, signed article Decathlon don’t is out so bad. Its color (or rather his UN-color) quite resistant. On the other hand, difficult to strutting on the beach: “color is irrelevant and does anyone, the mixture of Brown and neon fashion is completely outdated and Cup has no outfit,” says our style expert, Laureen Allegro. But considering the price of canon, there for his money.

The only one of our selection that contains cotton, where its lower resistance to chlorinated water. The pool has been fatal: Goodbye pretty blue complexion of the Hawaiian motif, it emerged all gray! However, it has not moved in sea water and rather well behaved to other tests. Side cut, is a classic, but that rather fit tall and beefy men: “his thigh width will tend to visually narrow legs,” warns our stylist.

Price aside, it is the Rolls Royce of the market. Quality aside, the promise is not kept. Dipped in chlorinated water, the shirt changes color, from blue to purple pattern. And after five washings, it had shrunk from just about anywhere. What saves him: his style. “It’s a boxer shorts loose and simple class, explains our stylist. The kind of swimsuit that fits all silhouettes, at all ages.” And so, for example, to Nicolas Sarkozy, a fan of the brand.

Disappointing! While the brand of men’s underwear has recruited eight swimmers l team of France of swimming (including Frederick Bousquet and Camille Lacourt) for its latest advertising campaign, this swimsuit does not support chlorinated, water and it was gray. Sea water succeeds barely better: it may bleed slightly if you put still wet. For our stylist, “he has a side Pajamas or underwear, which gives it an air shifted, that will please!

A disaster. Once out of the pool, it looks more like the one you bought! Blue and black at the beginning, we recovered it Brown and green after the chlorinated water. The machine, he may rub off on almost all textiles, sign of a tincture of poor quality. Finally, its label did not withstand washing and detached. And for our stylist, its composition should incorporate a bit of spandex to make more tight.
