General provisions for travel and residence (until the corona pandemic)

Citizens from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (and 48 other countries) can stay in Thailand for up to 30 days per entry without a visa, provided that the stay is purely tourist. Within a period of 6 months, you can stay in the country for a maximum of 90 days without a visa. You can travel as often as you like by plane. Entry by land and sea is limited to a maximum of 2 times per calendar year.

According to allcitycodes, the passport must be valid for at least 6 months upon entry. Make sure that the spelling of the name in the flight ticket is completely identical to the name in the passport, otherwise access to the aircraft may be denied.

If you plan to stay in Thailand for more than 30 days, you will need a visa to enter. You can either apply for the “ Tourist Visa ” (fees: 35 € for 1 entry; 175 € for multiple entries) (stay up to 60 days) or a “ Non Immigrant Visa ” at the Thai consulate in your home country before entering the country Can stay in Thailand for up to 90 days (fees: € 70 for 1 entry; € 175 for multiple entries). Tourist visa

For a stay of 60 days and a single entry

  • Fully completed visa application
  • Original passport
  • Copy of the passport
  • Copy of the flight ticket or booking confirmation
  • In the case of one-way flights, proof of departure must be provided (onward travel tickets or hotel booking or visa for the country of the next stage of the journey)
  • Visa fee of € 35
  • For children up to 15 years of age: copy of birth certificate, copy of parents’ passports

The “ Tourist Visa ” with a single entry (stay up to 60 days) can be extended once in Thailand for 30 days.

For a stay of 60 days per entry, multiple entries, period of validity: 6 months

  • Fully completed visa application
  • Original passport
  • Copy of the passport
  • Copy of the flight ticket or booking confirmation
  • In the case of one-way flights, proof of departure must be provided (onward travel tickets or hotel booking or visa for the country of the next stage of the journey)
  • Visa fee of 175 €
  • For children up to 15 years of age: copy of birth certificate, copy of parents’ passports
  • Proof of accommodation / hotel booking for at least one accommodation location
  • Certificate of employment / certificate of enrollment or guarantee statement and copy of ID from a third person if you are not employed
  • Proof of sufficient financial means: Bank statements from the last 3 months with a minimum amount of € 5,000

The “ Tourist Visa ” with multiple entry (multiple entry visa valid for 180 days) entitles the holder to stay for a maximum of 60 days at a time for single or multiple entries. With this visa you can enter and leave the country as often as you want within 180 days. So you can stay in Thailand for up to 9 months at maximum utilization by extending the 60-day stay at the end of the 180 days after the last exit and entry.

The extension of visas can be applied for at the Immigration office in Thailand.

Non immigrant “O” visa

This visa is available for people aged 50 and over, spouses of Thai people and volunteers. Required proof of persons aged 50 and over:

For a stay of 90 days and a single entry

  • Fully completed visa application
  • Original passport and a copy of the passport
  • 1 biometric passport photo
  • Copy of the flight confirmation
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources (pension notification with a monthly amount of € 1,200 net or proof of assets of at least € 5,000)
  • Visa fee of 70 €

For a stay of 90 days, multiple entries, valid for up to 1 year

  • All evidence that is also required for a single entry
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking confirmation, copy of a rental agreement, signed invitation letter and copy of ID from a guarantor / contact person in Thailand)

It is valid for 1 year and allows unlimited entry into the country. You can stay in the country for 90 days at a time. Then an exit is due for the purpose of extension (new stamp) or the extension at the immigration office in Thailand.

Required evidence for volunteers:

90 days stay, single entry (an extension is not possible)

  • Fully completed visa application
  • Original passport and a copy
  • 1 biometric passport photo
  • Flight confirmation
  • A letter addressed to the Thai embassy from the organization you will be working for, with a description of your job
  • Extract from the register of the organization
  • Visa fee of 70 €

Long stay: Annual visa (Non-Immigrant-O Visa A)

With the long-stay annual visa, people aged 50 and over have the opportunity to stay in Thailand for up to 365 days. You will need the following documents to apply:

  • Visa application in duplicate
  • Original passport
  • 2 copies of the first pages of the passport
  • 2 biometric passport photos
  • 1 copy of the flight confirmation
  • 2 copies of the pension notification
  • Health certificate from the family doctor
  • Criminal record certificate
  • CV in English
  • Proof of foreign health insurance (you can find out what the foreign health insurance cover must include on the homepage of the Thai embassy at de)

The pension must be paid in at least € 1,500 per month (net amount). If your pension is lower, you can provide evidence of bank statements from the last 3 months with an account balance of at least € 20,000 (equivalent to Bath 800,000).

Other visas

  • Business visa (90-day stay per entry)
  • Visa for training and further education (90-day stay per entry)
  • Media visa (90-day stay)
