I know the SIHH in Geneva in its 2014 edition (see page dedicated to this show) is already over for more than a week. However, I could not help but to present one of the most special watches to me the opportunity to experience. I speak of the Van Cleef & Arpels Poetic Complication Midnight Planetarium.
A timepiece with unique poetry
The stars, planets or the moon have always passionate Men. This is also why the watch has appropriated this theme very quickly (particularly popular in the eighteenth century). Van Cleef & Arpels jeweler spent watchmaking, decided this year to revisit this particular type of watches where the solar system planets perform their rounds around the sun . However, the watchmaker add here some of his poetry, because the sublime Midnight Planetarium allows you to enter his lucky day in the universe and also to admire the planets.
Poetic Complication Midnight Planetarium: the solar system on a watch
So special about this Van Cleef & Arpels is of course the presence of the solar system on the dial of this affordable timepiece. The sun, which stands in the center, sees around him the movement of six planets visible to the naked eye from Earth, in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.
Of course, to lead six planets on the dial of this Poetic Complication Van Cleef & Arpels has developed, with the House Christiaan van der Klaauw, a new automatic movement of great complexity. Indeed, the latter consisting of no less than 396 rooms allows each planet to move with his real rotation time (full turn of the dial), that is to say 29 years Sature, 12 years for Saturn 687 days to Mars, Earth 365 days, 224 days or 88 days for Venus Mercury.
A watch that tells the time too
With the beauty of the dial, one wonders if this Van Cleef & Arpels Poetic Complication Midnight Planetarium tells the time! Do not worry, the jeweler and watchmaker still thought to this essential function. For this, it will suffice you to just watch the shooting star – pattern lucky at Van Cleef & Arpels – which is at the periphery of the dial. As for the day and date, they are easy to see directly from the outside of the dial.
Another feature of this watch, you can select your lucky day. For this you need only place the triangle on the day of your choice by turning the bezel. When your lucky day comes, the Earth will get into the engraved star, sign your luck.
A jewelery watch exceptional
Van Cleef & Arpels has been recognized for over a century as a great jeweler. This is probably why every planet shown in this Midnight Planetarium is in a different gemstone. The Earth is turquoise to reconcile with the “blue planet”, Mercury serpentine chloromelanite Venus, the “red planet” Mars is red jasper, agate blue Jupiter and Saturn sugilite. Each planet is of course a perfect sphere, but different size, as the central sun and the shooting star, they rose gold.
This whole system is set in 6 discs of a deep and brilliant blue Aventurine which represents the infinity of space. Van Cleef & Arpels therefore present here a subtle and poetic creation that takes us into space. An exceptional watch!
