With soils among the most fertile in the United States, Iowa is one of the main agricultural states in the country: first national row for raising pigs, with a quarter of national production, and for corn production; second national row for cattle. The Iowa economy has thus long rested on corn belt (corn belt) and on breeding; however, crops today have diversified: soy, cereals (wheat, oats), fodder plants, sugar beet, fruit (apples, fisheries, grapes). Sheep and poultry farming is equally important.
Iowa Industries
Industrialization and service activities (insurance), in parallel with the development of agriculture and mining, experienced rapid expansion. Gypsum and coal are the main mineral resources. The industrial fabric rests on the heavy industries derived from coal, namely carbo-chemistry (fertilizers, rubber and plastics) and metallurgy, agri-food (animal feed, milling, canning factories), industrial and agricultural machinery, household appliances and electronics. Mississippi and Missouri are also two important waterways used to transport goods. Among the main tourist sites, the Okoboji and Spirit lakes are distinguished, as well as the historic places that celebrate the pioneer times (Fort Atkinson in particular).
