Dominated by agriculture and the mining industry until the mid-twentieth
century, Utah's economy has since diversified considerably. The state hides
very important mineral resources: copper, iron, gold, money, coal, oil, lead,
uranium and salt. The wooded mountains are the object of forestry, and the rest
of the soil is used for grazing: 75% of the agricultural income comes from
breeding (cattle, sheep, poultry). Irrigated crops (cereals, fodder, fruits and
vegetables) cover only a small proportion of arable land.
Industries
Most industries (metallurgy, agri-food, wood industries, petroleum
industries, chemicals, mechanical engineering) derive from local materials
first. Tourism is now one of the key sectors of the state's economy. In fact,
the region has several well-known natural and historical sites: the Zion
National Park and the Bryce Garganta National Park, the Newspaper Rock State
Park, which protects ancient Indian pictograms, and the Hovenweep Citizen
Monument, site of ancient Indian troglodyte dwellings.
