History of Altamonte Springs, Florida
Altamonte Springs, Florida is a city located in Seminole County, just north of Orlando. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area and has been since the late 19th century.
The area was first settled by the Seminole Native American tribe in the early 1800s. The name Altamonte is derived from Spanish words meaning “high hill” which refers to a large sand hill that was located nearby. In 1882, a group of settlers from South Carolina arrived in the area and established a small settlement called “Altamont” after the nearby sand hill.
In 1895, Altamont was officially incorporated as Altamonte Springs and became one of Florida’s earliest planned communities. The town was designed to be an idyllic resort community with wide streets and attractive parks, making it popular with wealthy travelers who were looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
By 1910, Altamonte Springs had grown into a bustling town with its own post office, churches, stores and other businesses. The railroads connected it to neighboring towns such as Sanford and Orlando making it easier for travelers to reach the area. As more people moved into the area, so did more businesses including banks, hotels and other services which helped fuel economic growth in Altamonte Springs during this time period.
