Trade relations with the Czech Republic

It can be seen from the table that Czech exports to Belize, which were quite stable, fell sharply in the last six years, even before the start of the pandemic. Exports are mainly focused on the arms industry and glass products. After years of lower imports, the trend has reversed in the last two years and imports have increased, even outstripping exports in 2020. The import specializes mainly in beverages and spirits and clothing products.

FTAs and treaties

Treaties with the EU

Belize is a member of the Caribbean Forum (CARIFORUM) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Membership in CARIFORUM includes the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between CARIFORUM member countries and the EU. Due to Brexit, the EPA agreement between CARIFORUM and the United Kingdom was also negotiated in 2019, which is in force from 01/01/2021. Membership in the CARICOM organization ensures that Belize has bilateral trade agreements with five Latin American countries – Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Costa Rica. Belize is part of the Central American Integration System (SICA) but not part of the Central American Economic Integration System (SIECA). Belize does not have an FTA with the US or Canada.

Contracts with the Czech Republic

The bilateral agreement on the abolition of the visa requirement for citizens of the Czech Republic and Belize has been in force since August 1, 2008. The agreement on the exchange of information in tax matters between the Czech Republic and Belize was signed on February 12, 2016 and entered into force on January 1, 2017.

Developmental cooperation

Development aid flows to Belize mainly from Great Britain. Belize does not provide development assistance. In 2017, ZÚ Mexico implemented a small local project “Musical instruments for teaching children from socially disadvantaged groups” in Belize.

In the 2014-2020 period, EU support focuses on the following three areas: renewable energy sources, healthcare and public finance management. The EU allocated USD 27 million for Belize for this period. The 2008-2013 programs focused on rural areas, improving living standards and supporting agriculture. The EU contributed EUR 1 million. Furthermore, Belize can draw funds from EU regional programs. The EU is currently cooperating with Latin America within the framework of the Multiannual indicative program for Latin America 2014-2020 with a total budget of EUR 925 million.

The program consists of two components. While the first of them is applied to the entire continent, the second part concerns only Central American countries. Within the regional program, the EU focuses on security and development (€70 million), good public administration, accountability and social equality (€42 million), inclusive and sustainable growth enabling human development (€215 million), the environment and climate change (EUR 300 million), education (EUR 163 million under Erasmus+) and support measures (EUR 15 million).
