Indiana has a diverse economy. Agriculture rests on cereal crops (corn, wheat) and breeding (pigs, cattle), particularly prosperous.
Soybeans, potatoes, crops (tomatoes, cabbages, onions) and fruits (apples, pears) are among the main products of the primary sector. Mineral resources are coal, oil and gypsum; these have favored an important industrial development since the beginning of the twentieth and century.
Indiana Industries
The industrial fabric consists of numerous activities: cement factory, oil refining, heavy metallurgy (steelworks, rolling mills), mechanics, electronics, agri-food (canning factories, dairy products), chemistry, paper, rubber and plastics. The northwest of the state, near Chicago, and the major cities of the state – Indianapolis, Gary, South Bend – concentrate the essentials of these different sectors. Major universities include Indiana University (1820), Bloomington, Indiana State University (1865) and Butler University (1855), Indianapolis. Indiana is a very touristy state, given that its natural advantages – forests, parks and lakes, notably Lake Michigan – attract many visitors each year.

Major Cities in Indiana
Fort Wayne
Fort Wayne, a city in the state of Indiana in the USA with about 485,000 residents with suburbs. It was founded as a French fort in 1686. Today, the city is an important railway hub. Fort Wayne also has several colleges and a large electronics and electrical engineering industry.
Gary
Gary, a city in the state of Indiana in the United States, on Lake Michigan. It has about 100,000 residents and has had a sharp decline in population since the 1980’s.
The city is home to one of the largest steel industries in the world, the US Steel Corporation. The cement industry and the chemical industry are also important industries. Gary was founded in 1906.
Indianapolis
Indianapolis is the capital of the state of Indiana, USA. The city has about 1.6 million residents, including all suburbs. It is located on the White River and is an important industrial and railway center. The city has operations for the production of aircraft, cars and medicines, and there are several mills and a slaughterhouse.
Indianapolis has a number of universities, including Butler University, established in 1850, and Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, established in 1969. The city was founded in 1821.
South Bend
South Bend, a city in the state of Indiana in the USA, east of Chicago. It has about 107,000 residents, or about 275,000 with suburbs. The city houses a number of aircraft and machinery industries. Former owner was among other sewing machine Singer produced there. The University of Notre Dame, where the Knute Rockne revolution revolutionized American football, is located at South Bend. The city was founded in 1820.
