The history of Mount Vernon dates back to 1837 when it was first settled as a trading post. In 1846 it became an official town with its own post office. The town grew steadily with cotton gins being built and several businesses opening up along Main Street. In later years, Mount Vernon was known for its oil production which began in 1910 and continued until the mid-1960s when oil production declined significantly throughout Texas.
