Formerly dominated by agriculture and the exploitation of its vast forests, Oregon State today has a diversified economy.
Mineral resources
Mineral resources are limited but hydroelectric energy is abundant. The main agricultural resources rest on breeding (cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry) and cereal crops (wheat, oats) in the north, crops (potatoes, beans) and fruits (pears, cherries, strawberries) in the west. Fishing (salmon, cod, shrimp), oyster farming and forestry (Cascade chain) are very developed. Oregon is the first national producer of wood. The main industrial sectors are wood-based industries (paper, plywood), agri-food, mechanical construction, electrochemistry, electrometallurgy (aluminum). The main centers of tourist interest in the state are: the Portland art museum (Rasmussen collection of native American objects), the national park of Crater Lake, several historic sites (Astoria Column, Fort Clatsop National Memorial) and ski resorts (Mount Hood).
