Long dominated by agriculture, the West Virginia economy experienced rapid industry development and mining from the late 19th and 19th centuries.

However, in a largely mountainous state, the state remains relatively poorer than its neighbors.

Industry

Mineral resources are important (bituminous coal, natural gas, oil and salt), but mining has suffered a relative decline. Virginia-Occident remains however one of the major national coal producers. Agriculture is practiced in the west of the state. The main crops are forage plants, cereals (wheat and barley), tobacco, arboriculture (fisheries and cherries) and horticulture. Raising (cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry) is important. Cattle breeding is mainly practiced on the Allegheny mountain tray. Forestry is developed in the Appalachian Mountains.

The industries derive essentially from the treatment and transformation of the first agricultural and mineral materials: basic metallurgy (iron, steel and aluminum), basic chemistry, industries derived from wood (construction wood, carpentry and paper), glass and ceramics industry, industrial mechanics, electronics, agri-food, textiles and clothing. The major tourist sites are the Blackwater Falls, the Hawk ‘s Nest and Pipestem Saltar parks.
