According to PSYKNOWHOW, the NoFollow attribute was introduced by Google in 2005. The idea comes from the two Google employees Matt Cutts and Jason Shellan. In principle, all links that are not of an editorial nature should be marked with it. A link is always editorial if it appears within an informational article or refers to an informational article.
With the NoFollow Tag, Google wanted to prevent that masses of links are continued to be placed in blog comments or guest books, or that these, often automatically generated links, have an influence on the search engine ranking. How NoFollow Links work

The NoFollow tag not only ensures that the robots do not follow the link, but also does not provide the linked website with any advantages in terms of ranking, as no link juice is passed on. According to this function, Google recommends using the tag in the following situations:
Purchased links: These links should not influence the search result because they do not correspond to the “natural intention” of a link – a recommendation. Basically, a user is being fooled by a purchased link because it is not a natural link.

Linking to untrustworthy content: The NoFollow tag is appropriate here if you do not want to take responsibility for the content that is referred to from your site. This is useful, for example, if you want to allow users to leave a comment.
Another method of using the NoFollow attribute is to control the link juice on your own site. This should exclude pages that are unimportant for the search engine, such as the imprint or registration pages, in order to direct the power to other important pages. In practice, however, it has been shown that this measure has no advantages. On the contrary: Google indicates in the Search Console help “rel =” use nofollow “for certain links” that it would be more productive to use the resources for user-friendly navigation and URL structure and the crawling process with the NoFollow attribute to influence.

Do NoFollow links affect SEO and if so, to what extent? When do they mean a risk? Or do links with the label play no role at all and can therefore be neglected when assessing a link profile?
These questions are answered quite differently in the SEO scene. While some are of the opinion that a backlink profile with a very high proportion of no-follow links would have no disadvantages, precisely because no PageRank is inherited and the link would therefore have no effect on the ranking, others are convinced that no-follow links do have a share could have a penalty from Google.
