A “ hyperlink ”, abbreviated to “ link ”, or backlink, connects one document with another. “Document” is usually understood to mean a website. Videos, PDFs, or other formats are also referred to as documents. The logical connection is that of the cross-reference in the literature, with the difference that this must be searched for manually.
According to FOODANDDRINKJOURNAL, the term “link” is often incorrectly used synonymously with backlink or inbound link in the SEO industry. In the field of SEO, one speaks of a link when it goes from a page to be optimized to another website. A backlink leads from another website to the page to be optimized, also known as an external link or inbound link. An internal link, links two documents within a domain. Outside of search engine optimization, one usually speaks simply of a link or a hyperlink.
Importance for the internet
Links are of immense importance to the Internet. If there were no links, websites would be completely isolated. To get to another website, you would have to enter the URL in the input field of the browser each time. Links are used to connect websites to one another. Probably the most important algorithm of Google to date, the PageRank, measures how many websites link to a certain page and calculates from this (and certain other factors) how this website is in relation to all other websites. With the exception of the Russian search engine Yandex, all search engines use links to define the ranking in the search results.
Before search engines existed, it was common for webmasters to include links to interesting pages on their own pages. This often resulted in entire “link directories” which were structured according to categories. These link directories were the forerunners of today’s web catalogs.
Links are usually written in the markup language HTML. It looks like this:

The URL within the quotation marks “” is the page to which the link refers, or the page that is loaded when you click on the link. The text within the brackets> <is the text that will be on the website, also called anchor text or link text. A link on a website looks like this:

There are several options that can be used to edit a link. It can be determined whether the linked page should be opened in a new browser tab or whether the existing window should be overwritten with the linked page. A nofollow attribute can also be added to a link.
Significance for Google
At the beginning of Google links were still extremely important for the effectiveness of the search engine, the importance of links for the algorithm is declining more and more. The declared goal of Google is to develop a semantic search that is based purely on the analysis of language or text without links. But this will be some time in coming. Until then, links are an important part of the network – a page to which no other pages link (backlinks) will be found by the search engines, but has little chance of ranking at all.
Outbound links are links in the SEO industry that point from a domain to be optimized to other domains or to other pages within a domain.
Such links are an important signal to Google and other search engines. Anyone who does not link to “outside” does not pass on recommendations. If he links outside, do these links say something about your own site – does a domain mainly link to Wikipedia or rather dubious sites? What is the relationship between outbound links and content on the page? Are the links nofollow? Are start pages or subpages (deep links) linked?
For the sake of courtesy and seriousness, one should adhere to a few basic rules for linking, which have emerged in the history of the Internet:
– Link when you quote something or have received information from a source.
– Link if the link offers added value for the user, for example to obtain more information or to be able to check your statements.
– The nofollow attribute should be used if the link should not be counted by Google. For example blog comments, which are very often the target of spam attacks.
– Pay attention to the ratio of content to links. Having 90% links and 10% content isn’t a good sign for Google (excluding certain aggregators).
In the field of SEO, backlinks are all links that refer to a website to be optimized. The entirety of these backlinks is also known as a link profile. The original meaning of a “back link”, ie the mutual linking of two websites, has changed in the field of SEO: backlinks (or inbound links or external links) are links that refer to a website to be optimized. These are the content of an active search engine optimization, be it through the generation of a link, be it through deletion or cancellation (see Google Disavow Tool). However, this does not rule out the importance of a backlink as a back link (page A links to page B and vice versa).
The generation of backlinks is the task of the “link builder”. The possibilities of getting backlinks to a page are extremely diverse. Fast procedures such as entering in web catalogs, bookmark services, article directories, guest books or comments must be treated with caution. If such a link is set, the portal should have “Trust”, i.e. be trustworthy and be able to offer the user real added value (example of a trustworthy web catalog: http://www.gelbeseiten.de/ or http: // www. dmoz.de/). Special industry portals can also be good web catalogs. We strongly advise against using untrustworthy sites, on which there is a lot of advertising or the imprint is incomplete. Such backlinks can lead to a manual or algorithmic penalty on the part of Google.
In general, backlinks are acquired by voluntarily linking good content on the site from other users. Together with social media, the chance of getting a backlink can be increased enormously.
Removal of backlinks
A backlink can be removed by addressing the webmaster of the linked page and asking him to delete the link from his website.
If this doesn’t work, you can tell Google that you don’t want this link to calculate your ranking. This is done using the Google Disavow Tool.
